Cumming's New Restaurants Are Making Two Very Different Bets

Two restaurants opened in Cumming this year, both within a few minutes of Peachtree Parkway, both drawing crowds on their first weekend. One is a familiar national name that built smaller than it usually does. The other is a first-time concept from local owners with a large space for an independent restaurant. Together, they offer a look at two different approaches to opening in Cumming.
The Cheesecake Factory opened at The Collection at Forsyth on July 21, taking over the space at 410 Peachtree Parkway, Suite 242, that Wild Wing Cafe vacated back in December 2024. According to Hoodline's reporting ahead of the opening, the restaurant was expected to bring roughly 280 jobs to Forsyth County. The official opening announcement from CTO Realty Growth, the center's owner, put the number at more than 200. Either figure is a meaningful hiring event for a single restaurant, but the more telling detail is the building itself. Most Cheesecake Factory locations run close to 10,000 square feet. This one, according to ToNeTo Atlanta's coverage of the lease, was built out at roughly 6,500 square feet, part of a company push to test smaller footprints.
The Cheesecake Factory didn't arrive alone. The same year brought Sephora, Warby Parker, Build-A-Bear Workshop, BODYROK, Rocket Fizz, and The Picklr to the same shopping center, with Miniso currently under construction and expected to open in September. These national brands are adding locations at the center as it continues to attract new tenants.
Five months before the Cheesecake Factory opened, and about ten minutes away on Market Place Boulevard, YAVA Kitchen and Brewhouse opened its doors on February 17 at 3001 Market Place Blvd in the Westshore development. The space runs roughly 8,000 square feet with seating for more than 300 guests, built around a wood-fired kitchen and a working in-house brewhouse. That's a bigger space than the Cheesecake Factory built just down the road, and YAVA opened as a new concept.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta's coverage of opening day, the kitchen is spacious enough to run a full wood-fired grill program, led by executive chef Bruno Vergara. The brewing side is run by Alex Ciaburri, who previously brewed for Roswell's From the Earth Brewing Company before bringing that experience to Cumming. The concept itself came together through Blue Orbit Restaurant Consulting, the group behind other Atlanta-area projects, in partnership with owners who have lived in Cumming for 15 years.
The size difference isn't the only thing happening at The Collection at Forsyth this year. The center has also been layering in reasons to linger after the stores close. Summer Fridays in Forsyth runs every Friday from May through September, bringing live music and to-go drink specials from participating restaurants to a stretch of lawn the center calls The Green, according to the event listing on the Collection's own site. It's a low-key weekly habit, not a festival, and that's the point. Shopping centers that only want foot traffic during business hours don't bother building a recurring evening series.
The city is doing something similar a short walk away. The Cumming Police Department is running Summer in the City, a two-night tribute band series at the Lou Sobh Amphitheater on August 25 and September 1, with proceeds benefiting Creative Enterprises, according to Patch's roundup of the season's events. That's not a retail play at all. It's a police department using free concerts as a fundraiser for a local nonprofit, which only works if there's already an audience ready to show up on a Tuesday night in August.
Put the retail center's Friday series next to the police department's benefit concerts, and a pattern shows up that the restaurant openings alone don't reveal. Both a private shopping center and a city department are independently betting that Cumming residents want a reason to be downtown in the evening, not just during store hours.

None of this requires a drive to Alpharetta or a trip into the city. It's what's opening, and what's already running, within a few minutes of most homes in Cumming.
A smaller Cheesecake Factory and a bigger, brewery-anchored YAVA aren't really contradictory signals. They reflect different approaches to restaurant scale: a national chain introducing a smaller format and local owners opening a larger concept. Together, the openings show national and locally developed concepts establishing a presence in Cumming.
